INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

Elizabeth's statement to mark international women's day this year:

*INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY*

I have spent the morning working on a moot case, which focuses on a case where a women is trying to rely on defences to murder after killing her abuser after an attack, whilst suffering from Battered Woman's Syndrome.

It is 2017 and domestic abuse still remains misunderstood and badly dealt with by our laws and legal system. We live in a country where:

-Over half of young women aged 18-21 reported experiencing at least one abusive incident from a boyfriend, husband or partner in a 2009 Refuge and YouGov survey

-More than half of young adults aged 16-21 reported experiencing controlling behaviour from a partner, according to ‘Define the Line’, a 2017 study by Refuge and Avon

-In a 2009 NSPCC survey, one quarter of girls aged 13-17 reported experiencing intimate partner violence; one in nine female respondents had experienced severe physical violence; and almost three quarters of girls had experienced emotional abuse

-Between 2012-2015 in over half (57%) of serious sexual assaults on women since the age of 16, the offender was a partner or ex-partner in at least one incident.

-On average two women are killed by their partner or ex-partner every week and on average the police receive an emergency call relating to domestic abuse every 30 seconds.

-Many women in prison have themselves been victims of serious crime and sustained abuse with most women entering prison under sentence (85%) having committed a non-violent offence, and nearly half of all women (48% ), compared to just over one-fifth of men (22%), reported having committed offences to support someone else's drug use.

The fight for equality is very real here in the UK. We must not become complacent or view the struggle for gender equality as something belonged to the past or to other nations. Women and men in nations across the world must continue this fight.

TORY/UKIP ELECTORAL PACT!

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron has warned Conservative supporters that a vote for the Tories is a vote for UKIP after revelations that some Conservative MPs have been in negotiations with UKIP to save their seats.

Will UKIP stand in Stratford, or will they back the Conservative part-time MP?

Elizabeth Adams for Stratford upon Avon Not spoken to the green party in Stratford. It's not the fact of a pact, it's the fact that the Theresa May Conservative agenda is increasingly looking like the UKIP manifesto, hence why they don't need to stand themselves anymore.

The Stratford Conservatives have reselected as their candidate the current part-time MP. I have already had local residents tell me they feel taken for granted. Stratford deserves someone fully committed to the job of representing local people. This election is a chance to change the direction of our country AND to send a message that we deserve better than a part-time MP. Mike Bond I wrote to Zahawi asking why Brexit is in the national interest (it must be, I pointed out, as the Govt is hell-bent on delivering it, with only an advisory referendum and plenty of alarms going off). He replied, totally avoiding the question and repeating the May mantra like a zombie.

TACKLING HOMELESSNESS

The Liberal Democrats have committed to ending the scandal of rough sleeping in Britain, as the Homelessness Reduction Bill enters into force today. Here in Stratford, there has been a noticeable increase in those sleeping rough over the winter months, with many local people desperate to help, but often complex factors make this difficult.

The Lib Dems have announced a series of measures we will put in place to help end rough sleeping.

Andy Howes Hi there, do you happen to know if I should interpret this as that we would only go into a confidence and supply agreement, or that we are only ruling out coalition with those particular leaders? And when he says Hard Brexit, is he just calling Brexit what it is, or is he making a distinction from soft Brexit, if such a thing actually exists, which is doubtful

A good local result will also give us the best start to fight the general election The choice is between the Conservatives who have failed to get action on traffic, and are putting at risk our children's services and social care with further cuts, whilst wasting money that could be saved by be organisation structures. Or a hard working, local Lib Dem team, who have a record of action for local people. On May 4th, vote Liberal Democrat for a better way.
